Customs seizes 800 fishing flares transported irregularly

Panamanian customs inspectors in Chiriquí seized 800 explosive flares used for fishing after finding them in a private vehicle during a checkpoint inspection.

The Directorate for Customs Prevention and Enforcement found eight small boxes containing the flares. After counting the shipment, officials estimated its value at approximately $12,000.

Authorities said the person transporting the material lacked the documentation required to move pyrotechnic or explosive products. The shipment also did not have the permits and other institutional and operational approvals required for handling such goods in Panama.

The merchandise was retained and placed under the custody of the National Customs Authority. The case was referred to the Administrative Proceedings Department, which will continue the investigation and determine any corresponding responsibilities.

Customs officials said the seizure formed part of their ongoing inspection and monitoring work to enforce rules governing the entry, transport and movement of merchandise in the country.
