Cybersecurity agency reveals ransomware tactics, citing 'key factor' fueling hacker boldness

Ransomware has escalated from a simple virus to a sophisticated, multi-faceted threat, integrating data theft, extortion, and artificial intelligence, according to Taiwan's Cybersecurity Administration (CSA).

The CSA outlined the typical attack chain: initial system intrusion, malware deployment, file encryption, and finally, ransom demands. Hackers gain access through phishing emails or exploiting system vulnerabilities. Once inside, they silently encrypt files, presenting victims with a ransom message to unlock their data. "Ransomware is a type of malicious program that encrypts files on a user's computer or locks the entire system, demanding a ransom payment in exchange for a decryption key or access restoration," the CSA explained.

Internationally, ransomware tactics are evolving. Hackers are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure like healthcare, energy, and transportation, where system shutdowns carry extremely high costs, making victims more likely to pay. "Double extortion" is now mainstream, where attackers not only encrypt data but also steal it, threatening to release sensitive information if the ransom isn't paid, thereby damaging corporate reputation.

Furthermore, AI is being weaponized by hackers to create highly convincing phishing emails that mimic legitimate communications, increasing the success rate of attacks. The widespread use of cryptocurrency, due to its anonymity, simplifies ransom payments and makes them harder to trace, further incentivizing cybercriminals. The CSA also noted the industrialization of cybercrime, with specialized groups focusing on different stages of attacks, from acquiring credentials to developing encryption tools and exploiting vulnerabilities.
