Czech Pirates propose law to protect renters from contract abuse

The Czech Pirate Party has introduced a legislative proposal designed to safeguard the housing security of numerous individuals residing in rental properties. The initiative targets the exploitation of repeatedly renewed short-term rental agreements, a practice the party argues unfairly disadvantages tenants.

According to Kateřina Stojanová, the party's vice-chair and head of its youth wing, the proposed amendment to the Civil Code will be presented to the Chamber of Deputies in September. This timing is strategic, preceding the upcoming municipal and Senate elections, suggesting the party aims to leverage this issue for political gain.

The Pirates' proposal seeks to establish clearer regulations for rental contracts, aiming to prevent landlords from circumventing longer-term tenant protections by using a series of short-term leases. This move highlights ongoing concerns about housing affordability and tenant rights within the Czech Republic.
