Czech Republic Reportedly Acts as Intermediary for South Korean Howitzer Transfer to Ukraine

The Czech Republic may be serving as a crucial intermediary in supplying South Korean artillery to Ukraine, according to reports from Ukrainian military media. While South Korea officially adheres to a policy of not providing lethal weapons directly to Ukraine, a recent analysis suggests a shift in its approach.

Ukrainian military publication "Defense Express" reported that the Czech Republic has imported 100 105mm howitzers from South Korea. This acquisition is significant because the Czech army does not utilize artillery of this caliber, indicating the weapons are likely intended for onward transfer to Ukrainian forces after potential refurbishment or upgrades.

This alleged transfer aligns with long-standing speculation that the Czech Republic could act as a third-party conduit for weapons to Ukraine. South Korea's defense export report for 2025 detailed the transaction, further fueling these theories. The 100 howitzers represent approximately 6% of South Korea's total inventory of 105mm artillery, which includes US-made M101 towed howitzers and K105 HT self-propelled howitzers.

The report also highlighted that South Korea possesses a substantial stockpile of 3.4 million rounds of 105mm ammunition, which Ukraine urgently needs.

The development raises questions about whether South Korea will also supply ammunition through the Czech channel and if this indirect transfer model will become a new norm for Ukraine to acquire South Korean heavy equipment. This potential easing of restrictions comes as Russia and North Korea strengthen their alliance.
