Daegu Masters Athletics Championships Kick Off in One Week

The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships are set to commence in just seven days, bringing together a global community of amateur athletes. The event will host 7,476 participants from 106 nations, with an estimated total of 11,000 people, including companions and volunteers, descending upon Daegu.

This championship, held every two years, is a celebration for athletics enthusiasts aged 35 and above. Daegu has the distinction of being the first city to host both the indoor and outdoor versions of the World Masters Athletics Championships, having previously hosted the indoor event in 2017.

The oldest participant is 106-year-old Chawang Janpram from Thailand, competing in shot put, javelin, and discus. South Korea's oldest competitor is 90-year-old Kim Myung-rak, who will participate in the 100m dash. Shin Haeng-cheol, 71, a former world record holder in the 70s marathon category, will compete in seven running events, including the half-marathon.

Organizers have implemented measures to manage the summer heat and potential heavy rainfall. Shade structures and rest areas will be available, and mist zones will be set up along the half-marathon course. Contingency plans are in place to reroute the marathon if necessary due to heavy rain warnings.

Beyond the athletic competitions, a "2026 Summer Festival" will be held at the Daegu Stadium, featuring K-culture experiences and performances. To encourage exploration of the city, international participants will receive free transportation cards, while domestic participants will be given 20,000 won in local currency.
