Daejeon civic groups demand accountability for fatal Hanwha Aerospace explosion

Daejeon civic groups are demanding severe punishment for those responsible for a fatal explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace facility and urging the city to halt its defense industry expansion plans. The incident on June 1st resulted in the deaths of five workers and injured two others.

Several organizations, including the Daejeon Citizens' Coalition for Sustainable Development and the Daejeon Peace and People's Solidarity Peace Committee, held a press conference outside the Hanwha Aerospace site. They condemned the repeated fatal explosions, pointing to similar incidents in 2018 and 2019 that claimed eight lives. The groups labeled the latest tragedy a clear man-made disaster and called for an impartial investigation and strict penalties.

"The lenient sentences given to factory managers and all responsible executives in past cases, including suspended sentences and light fines, have made the judiciary complicit in the moral hazard of corporations," the civic groups stated. They criticized the "tail-cutting" approach to punishment and the complacency that allows such incidents to occur, asserting that the recent accident proves this attitude leads to greater sacrifices.

The groups also used the tragedy to call for a reassessment of Daejeon's defense industry growth, particularly the "Defense AX Cluster" project, a campaign promise of the newly elected mayor. They urged the city to abandon plans that expand weapons production facilities near residential areas, emphasizing the need for reflection on worker safety, resident security, and the ethical implications of arms manufacturing.

The explosion occurred around 10:59 AM on June 1st in a cleaning room at the Hanwha Aerospace facility in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The cause remains under investigation.
