Daejeon prison missing 100 pistol rounds; Justice Ministry investigates

South Korea's Ministry of Justice has launched an urgent investigation into a shortage of 100 pistol rounds discovered at the Daejeon Correctional Facility. The discrepancy was identified during a comprehensive audit of the facility, prompting immediate action from the ministry.

A 10-member investigation team, led by the head of the Correctional Headquarters' Security Policy Division, has been dispatched to the Daejeon facility. The team is tasked with thoroughly examining the circumstances surrounding the missing ammunition. The ministry stated that the investigation will explore all possibilities, including the actual removal of ammunition and potential errors or misrecordings in the facility's ledgers.

The audit, which took place from June 8 to June 12, uncovered the significant shortfall in the facility's inventory of 9mm pistol rounds. The ministry has pledged to conduct a swift and accurate inquiry to ascertain the facts.

Following this incident, the Ministry of Justice plans to conduct a nationwide review of weapon and ammunition management practices at all correctional facilities. The goal is to establish comprehensive measures to prevent similar occurrences and ensure the secure handling of all armaments within the correctional system.
