Daejeon Records Most Non-Capital Region Victims in 'Jeonse' Scam Crisis

Daejeon has emerged as the region outside the Seoul metropolitan area with the most victims of "jeonse" (lump-sum deposit) scams, recording 4,393 confirmed cases as of the end of last month. This number places Daejeon third nationally, following Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and constitutes 11.2% of all victims nationwide. Notably, it represents the highest concentration of "jeonse" scam victims in any non-capital region. The scale of the problem in Daejeon is further highlighted by its significant share in the government's initiative to purchase homes affected by these scams for public rental housing. The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has acquired 1,189 such properties in Daejeon, making it the third-highest region after Seoul and Gyeonggi. These acquired homes are then offered as public rental housing to the victims, providing a measure of stability amidst the crisis. The widespread "jeonse" scams have severely impacted residents, leading to substantial financial losses and housing insecurity.
