Daniel Correia Appointed Interim Head of Ecuador's National Intelligence Center

President Daniel Noboa has appointed Daniel Correia Peñaherrera as the interim head of Ecuador's National Intelligence Center (CNI). This decision comes after the tragic death of the former head, Michele Sensi-Contugi, in a plane accident on August 19, 2026.

Noboa confirmed Correia's appointment during a radio interview on August 28, 2026. Correia, who has a limited public profile but boasts significant experience in the private sector, particularly in administration, shipping, and logistics, has maintained a professional and business relationship with President Noboa within the Corporación Noboa group for many years.

The CNI leadership role is currently temporary. Noboa stated that Correia will lead the intelligence agency until the end of the campaign for the sectional elections scheduled for November 29, 2026. Following the elections, a definitive decision will be made regarding Correia's continued tenure or the appointment of a new individual to the position.

President Noboa also clarified the function of the CNI, refuting claims that it operates as a "troll center." He emphasized that the CNI's intelligence work has been instrumental in capturing high-profile public targets, including aliases 'Fito,' 'Topo,' and 'Pipo.' Noboa asserted that the CNI's structure is crucial for identifying civilian and terrorist threats, highlighting its role in operations that have led to significant arrests and the uncovering of criminal activities.
