Daniel Noboa boosts $21 million to strengthen bioeconomy in the Amazon

The Ecuadorian government, under President Daniel Noboa, is set to inject $21 million into strengthening the bioeconomy in the Amazon region. This initiative, supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aims to broaden access to sustainable financing for projects in the Ecuadorian Amazon, fostering "bionegocios" and ventures within the popular and solidarity economy.

The program's objectives are multifaceted: to generate employment, preserve vital ecosystems, and stimulate the regional economy. The announcement was made during the "Encuentro de Bioeconomía y Financiamiento Verde Amazónico" (Amazonian Bioeconomy and Green Financing Meeting), organized by the National Corporation of Popular and Solidarity Finance (Conafips). The event convened key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, financial regulators, the IDB, credit unions, international organizations, experts, and local producers.

Kimberly Celis, representing the Ministry of Economy and Finance, emphasized the government's strategy to position the Amazon as a territory of both conservation and opportunity. "The Amazon must be seen as a territory of conservation and opportunities, where the bioeconomy, bionegocios, sustainable tourism, biodiversity markets, and responsible investment contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction," Celis stated.

Conafips highlighted its role in channeling international resources to grassroots organizations involved in biodiversity-related activities. The "BASE Program – Financing for Sustainable Amazonia" is backed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance through a sovereign guarantee and funding from the IDB. Official information indicates that these funds will improve credit access for sustainable productive initiatives that currently face hurdles in obtaining traditional financing.

This push for sustainable financing occurs as Ecuador holds the presidency of the Network of Finance and Planning Ministers of the Amazonian Countries. It is part of the IDB-backed "Amazonia Siempre" program, which seeks to establish financial mechanisms that harmonize economic growth, environmental conservation, and social inclusion. Héctor Mosquera, Conafips' general manager, views bioeconomy as a transformative opportunity to leverage the region's biological wealth for job creation and financial inclusion without harming Amazonian ecosystems.
