Danish Conservatives Propose State Purchase of Green Aviation Fuel Worth Billions

The Conservative party in Denmark has put forward a proposal to stimulate the production of green aviation fuel by having the state commit to an annual purchase of fuel worth approximately 2 billion Danish kroner ($290 million USD).

The plan involves the state procuring 35,000 tons of liquid energy annually, which would then be resold to airlines operating from Danish airports. This initiative is designed to address a critical need identified by major Danish companies ready to produce green aviation fuels. These companies have stated they require a commitment for large-scale purchases over a decade to proceed with investment.

Anders Storgaard, the party's new energy, supply, and climate spokesperson, explained to Politiken that the market currently lacks the necessary long-term commitment. "Right now, there are some large Danish companies that say: 'We are ready to produce the green aviation fuels, but we need someone to dare to commit to buying large quantities over a ten-year period,'" he stated. The Conservatives' proposal aims to "solve the gap in the market" by having the state step in.

Funding for this initiative is expected to come primarily from the revenues generated by the passenger tax on air travel, which was introduced in 2025 and is set to increase gradually until 2030. This approach seeks to align the cost of promoting sustainable aviation with the users of air travel.
