Danish residents concerned for pets after wolf encounter; authorities advise caution

Residents in Frederikshavn Municipality are expressing unease about their pets' safety after a recent wolf encounter. Mayor Jon Andersen has been fielding numerous calls from concerned citizens following an incident in the Bunken Klitplantage forest, south of Råbjerg Mile.

One resident captured a video of the encounter, showing the wolf exhibiting defensive behavior, including baring its teeth and raising its hackles. Experts from the Agency for Areal Re-cultivation and Water Environment (SGAV) suggest this was likely a protective response towards a wolf pup. Despite expert assessments indicating no immediate danger, the situation has unsettled locals.

Christian Rabjerg Madsen, the Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare, confirmed that international experts will be consulted to provide a second opinion on the wolf's behavior. He stressed the importance of taking such incidents seriously and assured that recommendations would be made based on the best available information. "I will certainly not hesitate to provide the recommendations that we and my authorities believe are correct," Madsen stated, emphasizing that coexistence with wolves requires a serious approach from authorities and politicians.
