Danube River at historic low, navigation nearly halted

The Danube River, a vital waterway, is experiencing an unprecedentedly low water level in Novi Sad, Serbia. The current level stands 78 centimeters below the reference point, causing sandbanks to emerge in areas that were once deep enough for navigation. Borislav Teodorović, who has lived on the water for years, described the sight as so unusual that even seasoned fishermen cannot recall a similar situation.

This drastic reduction in water depth has revealed parts of the riverbed and shorelines that are typically submerged. Teodorović noted that remnants of the Petrovaradin Fortress, which once stood on Ratno Ostrvo (War Island), are now visible. He expressed astonishment at the low levels, stating, “For 30 years I haven't seen anything close to such a low water level as today, and I live on the water.” The phenomenon has also exposed ancient artifacts, including what he described as “mammoth remains.”

The consequences for river traffic have been severe. For the past two to three weeks, cargo ships have been unable to navigate the river. While smaller passenger boats operated without passengers until about a week ago, even these have now ceased service. Teodorović identified the most critical points along this stretch of the Danube as areas near Sremski Karlovci, Oficirac, and parts of Novi Sad both above and below the Liberty Bridge and the bridge under construction.

With all the lowest points of the Danube now visible, Teodorović explained, it is clear where the river is deep and where it is shallow. This stark visibility underscores the severity of the drought conditions affecting the region and their impact on this major European river.
