DDR2 memory prices surge amid DRAM shortage, with Powerchip set to benefit

The memory market is experiencing a significant price surge for DDR2, a legacy DRAM technology, driven by a structural supply crunch in mature manufacturing processes. Analysts at TrendForce predict contract prices for DDR2 will jump approximately 55-60% in the second quarter and further increase by 35-40% in the third quarter. This scarcity stems from major DRAM manufacturers redirecting their wafer capacity towards high-demand, advanced products such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and server DRAM, crucial for AI infrastructure. Consequently, the demand for consumer-grade DRAM, including DDR3 and DDR4, has also tightened, pushing some brands and ODM manufacturers to downgrade specifications. To manage overall system costs, these companies are increasingly opting for lower-capacity modules or older process generations like DDR3 and even DDR2. This trend is exacerbating the shortage across the entire DRAM spectrum. In this evolving landscape, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. is expanding its DDR2 production at its facilities. Meanwhile, Winbond Electronics is gradually exiting the DDR2 market, shifting its production focus to higher-margin products like DDR3, DDR4, and LPDDR4. This strategic move by Winbond is expected to further intensify the tight supply situation for DDR2, creating opportunities for competitors like Powerchip to fill the gap and capitalize on the increased demand and pricing power.
