Deadly fire at Bangkok pub kills at least 27

A devastating fire ripped through a pub in Bangkok late Thursday night, claiming the lives of at least 27 people and leaving several others injured. Firefighters battled the blaze, which erupted around midnight in the northern part of Thailand's capital, for approximately 30 minutes before bringing it under control.

Eyewitness accounts and initial reports described scenes of chaos as flames engulfed the establishment. Images showed massive fire erupting from the pub's entrance, with thick black smoke billowing into the night sky as people attempted to flee.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the death toll and stated that the cause of the fire is still being investigated. The incident has brought to mind previous fire tragedies in Thailand, including a 2022 incident at a music pub in the eastern part of the country that killed 14 people.

More than a decade ago, on New Year's Day 2009, a fire at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok resulted in 66 deaths and over 200 injuries, reportedly caused by internal fireworks. The investigation into the current incident is ongoing.
