DEAR 2026 gala celebrates leadership, excellence

The MUSON Centre in Lagos buzzed with energy on Saturday, June 20, 2026, as Division D of Toastmasters International, District 130, hosted its flagship annual event, the Division Excellence Awards and Recognitions Gala. The gathering brought together a distinguished assembly of leaders, professionals, guests, and sponsors to honor communication excellence, mentorship, and service within the organization.

The evening commenced with a vibrant cultural performance by the University of Lagos Cultural Troupe, showcasing Nigeria's rich heritage and setting an engaging tone. A competitive segment, the Crucible Challenge, further captivated the audience with Toastmasters members demonstrating their wit, creativity, and public speaking prowess, eliciting enthusiastic cheers.

Distinguished guests, including Wale Akodu, Director of Training and Strategy at the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, representing the Lagos State Government, and Oyindamola Ogunsanwo from the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, representing the Office of the First Lady of Lagos State, delivered remarks emphasizing the critical role of leadership development and effective communication in national progress.

A major highlight was the presentation of awards to exceptional individuals and clubs. Nameti Akpan of Uyo Premier Speakers Club received the Mentor of the Year Award for his dedication to member development. Fiyin Toyo was named Toastmaster of the Year, having earned Toastmaster of the Month honors five times. Surulere Toastmasters Club secured the Most Innovative Club Award, while Eagle Toastmasters Club was recognized as Club of the Year for its consistent high performance. The ceremony also bestowed an Honorary Membership Award upon Mr. Ghassan Faddoul, Managing Director of Eko Hotels and Suites, acknowledging his significant contributions and support for leadership development within the Toastmasters community.
