Death during Samoa league game brawl prompts safety concerns

A death during a local rugby league match in Samoa has prompted calls for increased police presence at community sports events and raised serious questions about safety protocols. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Vaiala Rugby Fields during a game between the Marist Saints and the Apia Barracudas.

The evidence needs to be beyond reasonable doubt before we can charge someone. We haven't found anyone yet. So our investigation continues and we need to be satisfied that there is enough evidence to charge a certain suspect.

The deceased, identified as Marist Saints player Saveatama Faamavaega Saveatama, died as a result of an altercation on the field. Social media was inundated with footage capturing a widespread brawl among players. Disturbingly, the fighting continued even as the player lay unconscious on the ground. It was only after the altercation subsided that some individuals attended to the fallen player, but it was too late.

The thing is, we cannot avoid what has already happened and the things that happen as part of life. However, we try and be proactive and preventive through our work as law enforcement.

RNZ has learned that video evidence of the incident has been provided to the police as part of their ongoing investigation. Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samelu Afamasaga stated that no charges have been filed yet, as investigators are meticulously gathering evidence to ensure it meets the standard of "beyond reasonable doubt." He acknowledged that while tragedies are sometimes unavoidable, the police are committed to a proactive and preventive approach to law enforcement.

While videos are circulating on social media, the public is strongly urged to provide any such footage to the police, as it may assist significantly with the investigation.

The Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS) are actively investigating and have appealed to the public for any video footage or information that could assist their inquiry. They stressed the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and order at sporting events and supporting the pursuit of justice for the deceased's family. The authorities also issued a stern warning, urging all parties involved to refrain from any retaliatory actions, stating that such conduct would be dealt with swiftly and severely under the law. Attempts to get a comment from the mayor of Vaiala regarding village bylaws related to the incident were unsuccessful, though a village meeting was expected to address the matter.
