Death Toll from Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster Rises to 69

The death toll from a ferry disaster on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba has climbed to 69, with the recovery of 23 additional bodies. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the vessel capsized.

Police investigations suggest the ferry was significantly overloaded. It was reportedly carrying approximately 153 people when it departed from Kariba town harbour, far exceeding its authorized capacity of 90 passengers. Among the victims are at least 18 children, including 16 under the age of 10. The captain, Sign Patsikadova, 59, is also confirmed among the dead.

Search and recovery operations, involving divers, military personnel, and local fishermen, continued on Saturday. Authorities reported that 77 people were rescued shortly after the capsizing. Many survivors were taken to a nearby island before receiving medical attention in Kariba town.

Survivors recounted that high winds generated choppy waves, causing the boat to flood soon after departure. Passengers had urged the operator to return, but the vessel proceeded into open water before overturning. The government has declared a national disaster and deployed welfare agencies to provide aid to affected households.

The ferry was a crucial link for remote fishing communities along the lake, providing access to food supplies, markets, and essential services. Its loss has already begun to disrupt food deliveries, with shops reliant on the vessel experiencing shortages. The sinking is considered one of the country's worst maritime disasters in decades.
