Death Toll Rises in Colombia Earthquake; Thousands Missing

Rescue operations are intensifying in western Colombia following a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on Monday, leaving thousands missing and trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Initial reports indicate at least 179 deaths across four major areas, including Cali, Pereira, Chocó, and Manizales, although the federal government's latest update cited at least 111 fatalities.

Approximately 1,600 buildings have been reported damaged or destroyed. Soldiers, rescue workers, and desperate families are manually sifting through the rubble in a painstaking search for survivors. The Chocó region, near the epicenter, is one of Colombia's most impoverished and conflict-affected areas, largely accessible only by boat, jungle paths, or air, making the scale of devastation there difficult to ascertain.

Colombia's new president, Abelardo De la Espriella, who took office just days ago, traveled to Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, and mobilized military and police resources, including engineers, rescuers, and search dogs. Families are using online platforms to share information about missing relatives.

In El Caira, a town of 7,000 inhabitants, authorities reported that 80% of the buildings were damaged, with many homes constructed from wood and mud. The earthquake's impact is particularly devastating as it follows two significant earthquakes that recently struck neighboring Venezuela, causing widespread destruction and over 6,300 deaths. The U.S. State Department has announced $15.5 million in aid for shelter, food, and other relief efforts, with other Latin American governments also pledging assistance.
