Debutant Eliis Paas finishes in the top 10 at the para-cycling world championships

Eliis Paas marked her para-cycling world championship debut with a ninth-place finish in the women's C2 time trial in Huntsville, United States. She covered the 14.6-kilometre course in 25 minutes and 24.86 seconds, setting a personal record for average speed.

England's Amelia Cass won in 21:17.96, finishing 10.97 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Flurina Rigling. American Allison Jones took bronze, 1:28.48 behind the winner. The race took place in hot and humid conditions, as it had on the opening day of the championships.

Mari-Liis Juul finished 16th in the women's C5 class, which raced over 29.2 kilometres. France's Heidi Gaugain won in 39:14.49, ahead of Australia's Alana Forster and England's Crystal Lane-Wright. Juul's time was 52:23.55.

Anre Nõmme also placed 16th in the men's C4 race over 29.2 kilometres. France swept the podium, with Gatien Le Rousseau winning in 35:11.16, followed by Kevin le Cunff and Mattis Lebeau. Nõmme finished in 45:36.13.

Estonia head coach Maaris Meier said the riders had completed their races successfully. "Eliis rode her fastest time-trial race today. Anre had a solid ride, although the heat caught up with him on the second lap. Compared with his competitors, he still managed to maintain his pace better. Mari-Liis also did her job, although the second lap was harder for her in this heat," Meier said in a press release. The championships will continue with the road races.
