Debutante Azeez scores twice as Super Eagles beat Zimbabwe, reach Unity Cup final

Femi Azeez, a Millwall winger, made a memorable debut for the Super Eagles, scoring a brace that propelled Nigeria to a 2-0 victory against Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday. The 24-year-old's performance secured Nigeria's spot in the final, as they seek to defend their 2025 title.

Azeez, who recently earned the EFL Championship Player of the Season award for his impressive club performance, announced his international presence with a stunning long-range strike in the fifth minute. Terem Moffi provided the assist for the debutant's opening goal. Despite previous draws against Zimbabwe, including a crucial World Cup qualifier in March 2025, Nigeria's offense proved too strong.

Moffi, captaining the side, assisted Azeez again in the 63rd minute, sealing the win. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also made his senior international debut. Coach Eric Chelle utilized the tournament as an opportunity to assess new players ahead of Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Several players were substituted in the second half, with Oseni receiving a caution late in the game. Zimbabwe also made changes but could not find a way back into the match.

Nigeria will face either Jamaica or India in the final on May 30 at The Valley. Notable players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi were absent from the squad.
