Debutants Malawi stun Algeria 3-1 to reach historic WAFCON final

Malawi's women's national football team, known as the Scorchers, have achieved a historic milestone by reaching the TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations final in their very first appearance at the tournament. Their remarkable debut performance culminated in a 3-1 victory over Algeria on Wednesday, securing their spot in the championship match.

The Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, were instrumental in the Scorchers' triumph, combining for all three of Malawi's goals. Captain Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring with an acrobatic effort that hit the crossbar and went in. Her sister, Temwa, doubled the lead before halftime with a composed finish past the goalkeeper. Algeria managed to pull one goal back in the second half through Ikram Adjabi, but Tabitha Chawinga sealed the victory with her second goal of the match, putting Malawi up 3-1.

Malawi's path to victory was aided by an early red card shown to Algeria's Morgane Belkhiter in the first half, leaving the North Africans to play with 10 players. Despite the disadvantage, Algeria fought back and reduced the deficit, but Malawi's defense held strong in the closing stages to secure their place in the final. The Scorchers will now compete for the continental title in what is their first-ever WAFCON final.
