Defence Minister Reiterates Commitment to Maritime Security, Blue Economy

Nigeria's Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has strongly reaffirmed the federal government's dedication to enhancing maritime security and advancing the nation's blue economy. Speaking at the Nigerian Navy's 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night, Musa pledged sustained support for the Nigerian Navy, aiming to develop it into a technologically advanced and globally respected force.

The minister emphasized the critical need for innovation and the adoption of modern technologies to counter emerging security threats in the maritime domain. He stated that the future of naval operations hinges on advanced surveillance, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defense, and data-driven platforms. Musa assured that the government would continue to invest in the resources, capabilities, and enabling environment necessary for the Navy to safeguard Nigeria's maritime interests and regional waters.

Musa highlighted the Nigerian Navy's significant contributions over its 70-year history, describing the service as a model of professionalism, excellence, discipline, and resilience. He acknowledged the vital role the Navy plays in supporting national development by protecting strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and other critical maritime assets. The minister noted that the Navy remains at the forefront of combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.

Furthermore, the Defence Minister recognized the Navy's broader contributions to internal security operations and its support to other security agencies, which are essential for maintaining the peace and stability required for economic growth. He also commended the contributions of international partners in ensuring maritime security and stability within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond. The minister congratulated award recipients, honoring their dedication and service.
