Defending champion Alcaraz withdraws from Cincinnati Open

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open, organizers announced Tuesday, citing an ongoing wrist injury. The withdrawal marks a significant setback for the young Spaniard, who had been slated to make his return to the ATP Tour at the event.

Alcaraz, 23, has been sidelined since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in April. The injury forced him to miss key tournaments, including his title defense at the French Open and Wimbledon. His absence from these Grand Slams highlighted the severity of the issue.

Tournament director Bob Moran expressed understanding for Alcaraz's situation. "We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible," Moran said in a statement. The Cincinnati Open was scheduled to be held from August 13-23.

Last year, Alcaraz captured the Cincinnati title after his opponent, world number one Jannik Sinner, retired during the final match. His withdrawal this year means the tournament will crown a new champion.
