Defensoria del Pueblo Investigates Injury of Student at School

The Defensoria del Pueblo has intervened in the case of a six-year-old girl injured by falling debris at the San Francisco educational unit in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The incident occurred when a section of the school's exterior facade detached, striking the child.

According to municipal health secretary José Carlos Gutiérrez, the girl was playing during recess when strong winds caused a piece of the roof's exterior to fall. The debris hit the minor's head and foot. She was immediately transported to a local health center for first aid and is currently in stable condition, remaining under observation for 24 hours as a precautionary measure.

Defensoria officials have verified that the minor is receiving timely and adequate medical care. They also conducted an inspection of the educational unit to understand the circumstances of the accident and identify the infrastructure's condition. The goal is to formulate recommendations and preventive actions to avoid future occurrences.

Sheila Gómez Santivañez, the departmental Defensorial delegate for Santa Cruz, met with the municipal secretary for Health and Human Development. She recommended immediate attention and prevention measures. During the inspection, the detachment of wall cladding was attributed to deterioration and lack of maintenance. Representatives of the maintenance company stated their current contract does not cover infrastructure repairs, but they will undertake necessary work under instructions from the District 12 Sub-mayor.
