DEM Party Lawmaker Suggests Potential Arrangement for PKK Leader Öcalan

Discussions are underway for a framework law that could potentially address the status of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and other key figures within the organization, according to Sezai Temelli, Deputy Group Chair of the DEM Party. Temelli revealed that negotiations are ongoing concerning the status of Öcalan, the situation of PKK executives, and the scope of individuals who might be permitted to return to Turkey.

"We have received information that a negotiation is still underway regarding Abdullah Öcalan's status, the situation of organization executives, and the scope of who can return to the country," Temelli stated in an interview with İlke TV. He suggested that a special arrangement for Öcalan might be included in the legislation, emphasizing his crucial role in initiating and facilitating the peace process.

Temelli stressed that any legislative steps should not be limited to an initial phase, advocating for a process that encourages future progress. "This should be included in this law specifically, it must be," Temelli asserted, calling for sensitivity from all parties involved in what he described as a significant step for Turkey.

The proposed framework also plans for the gradual reintegration of militants into social and legal life, contingent on them laying down their arms. This would encompass individuals currently in prison or in exile, aiming to facilitate their participation in society. Temelli expressed expectations for significant developments from government officials on this matter, indicating an understanding that a regulatory measure concerning Öcalan will be implemented.
