Demanded extradition of Hasina aide from India: Bangladesh minister

Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, a former home minister and close associate of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Kamal is among several individuals considered fugitives who allegedly fled the country along with Hasina amid the widespread protests against her government in 2024.

Shama Obaed Islam, state minister for foreign affairs, confirmed that a letter seeking Kamal's return was recently sent to India. She stated that extradition requests are typically sent separately for each fugitive. Kamal was previously sentenced to death in absentia by the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal for alleged "crimes against humanity" committed to suppress the protests.

Regarding the former Prime Minister Hasina, who has indicated her Awami League colleagues plan to return around December, Islam stated that if Hasina surrenders, "the existing law will be followed. She will have to go to jail."
