Democracy Day: Amnesty boss praises Tinubu's impact on Niger Delta development

Dennis Otuaro, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), stated that Democracy Day serves as a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey and a unifying point for the nation's political development. He described June 12 as symbolizing electoral freedom and the pursuit of credible democratic governance, reflecting Nigeria's aspiration for fair elections and accountable leadership.

In a statement marking the occasion, Otuaro paid tribute to the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and others involved in the June 12 struggle, acknowledging their sacrifices in restoring democratic rule in 1999. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to reinforce democratic institutions and broaden civic participation in governance.

"The Niger Delta is enjoying the dividends of democracy under the administration of President Tinubu," Otuaro declared. He linked improvements within the PAP, such as expanded funding for scholarships, skills acquisition, and empowerment initiatives, to increased government support. Currently, over 8,235 students are benefiting from local and foreign scholarship schemes under the program. Otuaro also pointed to federal projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the South-South Development Commission, the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoniland, and the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, as indicators of the government's focus on the region's development.

Addressing security, Otuaro noted ongoing government efforts to tackle insecurity and urged citizens to support security agencies. He called on youths and former agitators in the Niger Delta to remain committed to peace, emphasizing its necessity for sustained development. Otuaro cautioned against misinformation and political manipulation, advising vigilance against false promises. He maintained that the administration has demonstrated commitment to the region through visible projects and interventions, stressing that continued cooperation is vital for further progress. He also urged political support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections to consolidate peace and development.
