Democratic Party Demands Supreme Court Chief Justice, Court Administration Chief Appear Before Assembly

The Democratic Party has escalated its demands for accountability from the highest levels of the judiciary and the ruling party. Floor leader Han Byung-do insisted that Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae and Court Administration Chief Noh Kyung-pil must appear before the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on July 31.

He specifically questioned Noh Kyung-pil's reported contact with four Supreme Court candidates to re-initiate the nomination process, demanding an explanation for Chief Justice Cho's alleged push for the nomination without presidential consultation.

The police must thoroughly investigate the entire situation of the false closure, including the responsibility for supervision, and severely punish those involved.

The party also turned its attention to law enforcement and a controversial lawmaker. Han demanded a comprehensive investigation into the Jeju police's alleged false closure of the case involving the disappearance and death of Jang Mi-ran, calling for severe punishment for those responsible and a complete overhaul of the police system. Furthermore, the Democrats urged the People Power Party to expel lawmaker Lee Jin-suk, whose remarks about the nation were deemed insulting to the May 18th Democratic Uprising and the president. Han warned that if the ruling party refused to cooperate, the expulsion motion would be put to a vote in the National Assembly.
