The top three contenders for the Democratic Party's August 17th leadership convention, Kim Min-seok, Song Young-gil, and Chung Jin-suk, converged on the Honam region to court party members. This strategic move targets the region's significant bloc of votes, which is seen as decisive for the upcoming election.

The Honam region, comprising North and South Jeolla provinces, holds a substantial number of eligible voters and is therefore considered the most critical battleground in the convention. The candidates' focus here underscores its importance in swaying the outcome.

This intensified campaigning in Honam follows closely contested primary results in the Chungcheong and Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam regions. In those earlier rounds, Kim Min-seok and Chung Jin-suk were separated by a mere 1% point, highlighting the tight competition among the candidates.

Kim Min-seok, for instance, was scheduled to visit Namwon and Gimje in North Jeolla Province on August 4th as part of his efforts to garner support. The candidates are deploying various strategies to appeal to the party's base in this pivotal electoral landscape.
