Democratic Party urges conservatives to cooperate on housing bills

Han Byung-do, interim leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party, has called on the People Power Party (PPP) to move beyond rhetoric and actively cooperate on passing crucial housing supply legislation. Han criticized the conservative PPP, stating they are "merely shouting about supply" while actively blocking parliamentary efforts to address the housing crisis.

During a party meeting, Han Byung-do asserted that the PPP is the primary obstacle to the passage of government-backed housing supply bills. He specifically mentioned that key legislation, including the Housing Act, Urban Regeneration Act, and Public Housing Special Act, have cleared committee reviews but are stalled in the plenary session due to PPP opposition.

"If they intend to criticize the government's real estate policy, they should first fulfill their responsibilities," Han stated, emphasizing that the Democratic Party is prepared to process the related bills immediately. He urged the PPP to cooperate in holding a plenary session on July 13 to pass these vital measures, suggesting their sincerity on housing supply would be demonstrated through such action.

The People Power Party is the very party that is blocking the passage of the government's supply measures in the National Assembly.

The meeting also saw criticism directed at Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who has expressed differing views from the government on housing supply strategies. Han Jeong-ae, the Democratic Party's policy chief, expressed regret over a recent forum hosted by the Seoul city government, characterizing it as a platform for criticizing the government's tax reform proposals and advocating for private development.

Given Mayor Oh's stance, Han Jeong-ae anticipates continued disagreements between the city and the central government regarding the utilization of idle land and green belt areas for housing development. The Democratic Party plans to persuade the public on the necessity of increasing housing supply while working with the government to identify and utilize available land resources.
