Democrats gain momentum in pivotal US Senate and governor’s races in Texas

Democrats are showing increasing momentum in key U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races in Texas, a state long considered a Republican stronghold. Recent polling suggests a tightening of the races, potentially transforming the Lone Star State into a competitive battleground ahead of the November midterm elections.

A survey released by the nonpartisan research initiative Texas Pulse shows Democratic nominee James Talarico leading the U.S. Senate race by four points, with 47 percent support compared to Republican rival and state Attorney General Ken Paxton's 43 percent. This finding echoes another poll from earlier in the week, which also placed Talarico ahead. These results suggest a growing advantage for Talarico, who was tied with Paxton in a June Texas Pulse poll.

Analysts suggest that the Democratic gains are partly fueled by strong support among independent voters. One poll indicated that 57 percent of independent voters preferred the Democratic candidate, while another Fox News poll found 68 percent of independents backing Talarico. This trend is significant in Texas, where no Democrat has held statewide office in over three decades, highlighting the potential for a competitive election.

The Democratic Party is aiming to regain control of Congress in the upcoming midterms. While flipping the House of Representatives is seen as more achievable, the Senate races, including the pivotal contest in Texas, are critical for either party to secure or maintain control of the upper chamber. The cost of living remains a major concern for voters, potentially influencing their choices in November.
