Demolition of Slezanka in Opava continues as archaeologists uncover cellars and a cesspit

The demolition of Slezanka in Opava has opened a window onto the history hidden beneath the Horní náměstí courtyard. During a four-month archaeological survey, researchers mapped six original medieval plots and examined what remained below the former buildings.

The archaeologists found filled-in cellars with masonry dating from the 15th century. They also uncovered unique painted decoration, offering evidence of how the inner block developed and was used over time.

The work has continued as demolition proceeds, with the underground remains providing a record of the site’s earlier layout and construction. The discoveries include not only the cellars but also a cesspit, adding another detail to the picture of life in the historic courtyard.
