Dendermonde's Ros Beiaard procession set for June 2, 2030

Dendermonde has announced that its iconic Ros Beiaard procession will return on Sunday, June 2, 2030. This significant cultural event, which occurs only once every ten years, draws an estimated 100,000 spectators and is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Because the Ros Beiaard procession only takes place every 10 years and requires extensive preparations, it is important to announce the specific date as early as possible.

The early announcement of the date, made by the Ros Beiaard Committee, is intended to give ample time for the extensive preparations required. Mayor Leen Dierick emphasized the need for an early notification, particularly for local entrepreneurs who need to plan their activities around the event. The city itself also needs time to secure sponsors and navigate evolving regulations.

Preparations for the 2030 procession will involve several key stages. The scenario for the procession needs to be written, new floats must be constructed, and the 'Four Heemskinderen' (Four Horsemen), who will ride the Ros Beiaard, must be chosen. The Ros Beiaard itself is a massive horse figure weighing approximately 800 kilograms, with the riders adding nearly another 200 kilograms.

Historically, the procession's timing was irregular, often tied to significant city events. However, since 1990, a decision was made to hold it every ten years. The 2020 edition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually taking place in May 2022. Adhering to the established periodicity, the next event will now occur in 2030. The city has also opted for the Ascension weekend in 2030, as the event has expanded into a four-day affair, requiring numerous locations for rehearsals.
