Denmark appoints Kent Nielsen as new national football assistant coach

Kent Nielsen is returning to the Danish national football team as an assistant coach, signing a two-year contract.

Nielsen, 64, departs his role as head coach for Silkeborg IF, where he managed 272 matches since 2019. National coach Brian Riemer expressed his satisfaction with the appointment, highlighting Nielsen's "great capacity" and suitability for the desired team dynamic. Riemer noted that Nielsen's extensive experience and shared offensive philosophy make him an ideal replacement for Morten Wieghorst, who is leaving at the end of his contract.

Nielsen, a "legend" of the Danish national team, played 54 times for Denmark and was part of the 1992 European Championship-winning squad. He has coached several Danish clubs, including AC Horsens, Brøndby IF, AaB, and OB. He expressed his excitement about rejoining the national team, emphasizing the "enormous honor" of representing his country. "I am proud to be back around the national team," he said, looking forward to assisting Riemer and the rest of the coaching staff. Nielsen also mentioned that he is at a career stage where a more "withdrawn role" working with top players suits him well.
