Denmark attempts to shoot wolf exhibiting 'problematic' behavior near humans

Danish authorities are actively trying to locate and shoot a wolf that has been exhibiting concerning behavior, frequently approaching humans and entering private gardens in the Nørre Nebel area. The Naturstyrelsen (Danish Nature Agency) has been attempting to track the wolf since August 6 using thermal drones and armed personnel.

To bolster their efforts, a text message service was established on Tuesday to alert the public and aid in the search. The article clarifies that the term "problem wolf" is not a biological classification but rather a term used in policy and management to describe wolves that display behavior exceeding societal tolerance limits.

Internationally, such animals are often referred to as habituated or "bold wolves," indicating their lack of fear towards humans and their tendency to seek proximity. A problem wolf is defined as one that lacks instinctive fear, does not flee from humans, or repeatedly seeks out areas with human presence. The criteria for intervention also include instances where a wolf attacks livestock despite preventative measures like wolf-proof fencing, or attacks dogs.

Authorities can permit the regulation of wolves if no other solution exists and if it does not threaten the species' natural distribution. The Naturstyrelsen, in conjunction with other environmental agencies, assesses whether a wolf qualifies as a problem animal and if lethal action is necessary. The current operation aims to address the specific issue posed by this bold wolf in Nørre Nebel.
