Denmark faces heavy rain and aquaplaning risks this weekend

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a warning for heavy rain across Denmark, expected from Saturday evening through Monday. This forecast poses a significant risk to drivers during a typically busy summer travel period.

The Danish Road Directorate is specifically cautioning motorists about the potential for aquaplaning. This phenomenon occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tires and the road surface, causing a loss of traction. The directorate urges drivers to exercise extra vigilance, particularly in low-lying areas and beneath viaducts where water is more likely to accumulate.

According to DMI, rainfall could reach 30 to 50 millimeters within a 24-hour period in many locations, potentially accompanied by thunder. The rain is expected to begin in North Jutland on Saturday evening and move southward over the following days, with the southern regions of Lolland, Falster, and the South Funen Archipelago anticipated to see the rain clear by Monday morning.

The heavy rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure system moving down from the north over Denmark. While all warned areas will experience rain, the amounts are expected to vary considerably by location. Drivers are advised to drive cautiously and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
