Denny completes 68-year first to claim discus gold for Australia

Australia's Matt Denny has etched his name in Commonwealth Games history, becoming the first man in 68 years to successfully defend the discus gold medal. Denny secured the title with a dominant throw of 67.73 meters in Glasgow, overcoming challenging conditions to outperform rivals.

I knew that there was that pressure there and I clearly had the best [throw] so far this season and had been performing the best, so there was that expectation there. More so I think the expectation was from myself, but it is very special to make these kind of marks and do what people haven't done for a long time.

His victory marks a significant achievement, following his gold medal win at the 2022 Birmingham Games. Denny's performance solidifies his status as a leading figure in the sport, adding to his Paris Olympics bronze medal and a silver medal from the 2018 Gold Coast Games in the hammer throw.

The last athlete to achieve this feat was South Africa's Fanie du Plessis, who won consecutive discus titles in 1954 and 1958. Denny acknowledged the pressure associated with being a favorite but expressed pride in his ability to perform against top competitors.

It's not an easy sport to do and I'm in good company, so I'm pretty proud of the fact I can still prove myself against those guys and put some good distances out.

Following his win, Denny shared a heartwarming moment, completing a lap of honor with his seven-month-old son, Roman, in his arms. He highlighted the crucial role his wife, Mia, and son have played in his demanding career, providing grounding and support during extensive travel and competition. Denny emphasized that sharing these moments with his family is the most important aspect of his success.

[Roman] is not going to remember it but I know I will when I'm old and grey. It's a tough sport and there's a lot that goes into it behind the scenes, so you have to have people who understand how you need to operate. She [Mia] has been one of those people who just know how I operate, so to be able to share these moments with them … is the most important thing.
