Deportivo Quito Aims for Pichincha Title in Historic Season

Deportivo Quito, known as 'AKD', is on the cusp of winning the Pichincha provincial title, marking a significant milestone after an 11-year hiatus from Ecuador's top football league. The team faces Real Puerto Quito in the Ascenso league final this Saturday.

The 'team of the city' has already secured its place in the national phase of the Ascenso Nacional tournament. Their journey through the provincial stage has been historic, characterized by an undefeated streak. Under coach Sebastián Blázquez, Deportivo Quito has amassed 14 wins and two draws in 16 matches, boasting an impressive win rate close to 92%.

Their defensive solidity is a key factor, having conceded only two goals throughout the provincial campaign. This strong offensive and defensive balance has been central to Blázquez's project for promotion. Striker Roberto Ordóñez, nicknamed 'La Tuka', has been instrumental in their attack, scoring 10 goals and leading the team's offense.

Deportivo Quito has also bolstered its squad for the decisive phases, adding reinforcements like Davor Montiel, Jamilton Carcelén, Paúl Perlaza, Demian Rea, and Frickson Borja. The club is navigating Ecuador's new promotion format, which rewards consistency over knockout rounds. This system differs from past formats that proved challenging for Deportivo Quito.

Last year, the team was eliminated from the national phase by Mineros SC by a narrow margin, despite being undefeated provincially. This year, after the Pichincha final, Deportivo Quito will compete in a national hexagonal starting August 8. Success in this phase requires finishing in the top two to advance to a quadrangular, where they must secure first place to reach the final quadrangular for a chance at promotion to Serie B in 2027.
