Designer Sylvie Cachay Found Dead in Hotel Bathtub; Boyfriend Nicholas Brooks Under Scrutiny

The investigation into the death of aspiring designer Sylvie Cachay, found deceased in an overflowing bathtub at New York City's exclusive Soho House on December 9, 2010, centers on her boyfriend, Nicholas Brooks.

Cachay, who launched her swimwear line Syla in 2006 with aspirations of becoming a household name, met Brooks in the summer of 2010. Brooks, then 24, had a privileged background but struggled with employment, supported by a trust fund from his father, Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks. Joseph Brooks himself faced numerous sexual misconduct charges around the same time.

Their six-month relationship was fraught with instability, characterized by frequent breakups and reconciliations. The tension escalated in the days leading up to Cachay's death. Her brother reported that Sylvie had become suspicious of Brooks after noticing significant withdrawals from her bank account. She confronted him via email, accusing him of theft and threatening to involve the police.

Despite the conflict, the couple met at Cachay's West Village apartment on the night of December 8, 2010. According to Brooks's statement, a fire broke out in the apartment while he was showering, igniting Cachay's bed as she slept. He claims he woke her and extinguished the fire, after which they decided to stay at a hotel.

They checked into Soho House around 12:31 a.m. on December 9. Security footage shows them at the reception desk. A hotel employee assisted Cachay to Room 20, while Brooks completed check-in. A busboy later testified to entering the room with Brooks shortly after, observing the scene before leaving.
