Devastating fire destroys fire station in Los Lagos, Chile; one dead

A devastating fire ripped through the heart of Los Lagos, Chile, early Tuesday, reducing the local fire station and nearly a full city block to ashes. The blaze consumed several homes and businesses adjacent to the firehouse, leaving a trail of destruction.

Tragically, one person died in the inferno. Reports suggest the individual, who had mobility challenges, could not escape the rapidly spreading flames. The fire also claimed a fire truck, a boat, and personal protective equipment belonging to the firefighters.

Despite the significant losses, the commander of Los Lagos firefighters, Miguel Segovia, stated their morale remains high. "We lost a station, but we are in high spirits," he said, confirming the fire was contained with five homes affected.

The mayor, Víctor Fritz, conveyed deep sorrow and solidarity with those impacted. "The loss of spaces, jobs, and material goods creates a profound impact, especially when it affects such an important and beloved institution like the Firefighters of Chile," he stated. The municipality has pledged to support affected families and coordinate recovery efforts.
