Devastating floods in Nepal: UNICEF warns over 17,000 children need urgent humanitarian aid

UNICEF has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian aid in Nepal, warning that over 17,000 children are in critical need following devastating flash floods. The disaster, which struck the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading on August 26, has left a trail of destruction, sweeping away homes, schools, and essential infrastructure.

Alice Akunga, UNICEF's representative in Nepal, described the harrowing scenes, stating, 'In several localities, children have literally seen their lives swept away before their eyes in a matter of moments.' She highlighted the damage to homes, classrooms, and health facilities, emphasizing the profound loss experienced by many children who have either perished or lost loved ones.

The floods have resulted in a significant loss of life, with provisional figures indicating 552 deaths in Nepal and five in Tibet, China. Additionally, over 1,400 people are reported missing. The destruction of roads, bridges, and communication networks has severely hampered rescue and relief efforts, making access to affected areas extremely difficult.

UNICEF is calling for $17.2 million to support its emergency response operations. The organization aims to provide critical assistance to the affected population, particularly the vulnerable children who have borne the brunt of this catastrophe. The scale of the damage to schools, with 18 completely destroyed and 20 damaged, underscores the long-term impact on education and recovery.
