DFB-Pokal draw gives Magdeburg a blockbuster trip to Bayern Munich

1. FC Magdeburg received the toughest possible draw for the second round of the German Cup: an away match against Bayern Munich.

The meeting between the record cup winners of East Germany and the Federal Republic will take place on October 27 or 28. The clubs have met only once before, when Magdeburg won 4-2 on penalties on November 1, 2000.

Magdeburg took the lead through Ofodile before Bayern’s Hasan Salihamidzic equalized. Jens Jeremies and Giovane Elber missed from the spot for Bayern, while every Magdeburg player converted. The victory came under coach Eberhard Vogel, who died earlier this week.

RB Leipzig will face one of the remaining lower-division teams away from home, traveling to third-tier Rot-Weiss Essen. Leipzig also played Essen in the cup in 2024, winning 4-1 after falling behind in the second minute.
