Diamonds win bronze medal with an eye to greater things for netball

The Australian netball team, known as the Diamonds, has secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, a victory tinged with the disappointment of a semifinal loss but celebrated for their resilience.

We had such a quick time to process what happened, I think a lot of us still feel quite numb. Then you go out and have a game like we did, we're so proud and we know all of Australia have been behind us, so it's been a real rollercoaster of emotions in a very short time frame. But I think the overwhelming feeling is pride and a lot of love for each other.

Less than 20 hours after a heartbreaking semifinal defeat to Jamaica, the Diamonds faced England in the bronze medal match. Despite the emotional toll of the loss, the team rallied to secure a 65-80 win, extending their consistent medal-winning streak at the Games. Defender Jo Weston described the experience as a "rollercoaster of emotions," highlighting the quick turnaround from feeling "numb" after the semifinal to immense pride in their bronze medal performance.

They always say Diamonds are made under pressure and I think that really showed in us today. Although it's not the colour we were after we're really proud about it.

Coach Stacey Marinkovich emphasized the team's ability to mentally switch focus after a gut-wrenching loss. She noted that the night between games was dedicated to allowing players to "be vulnerable" and process their disappointment. However, the subsequent performance demonstrated a strong team culture, proving that their values are more than just words. "That took a lot of grit to be able to go out there and get that result," Marinkovich stated.

It was very emotional last night, it was still probably lingering today a little bit, so to be able to mentally switch in showed our culture isn't words on a wall.

While the bronze medal is not the gold they aimed for, the Diamonds' performance underscores the increasing competitiveness of international netball. The semifinal loss to Jamaica, who went on to contest the final against New Zealand, highlights the growing strength of nations like Jamaica and England in the sport. Weston acknowledged this, saying, "International netball is the best it's ever been, which is so good for the sport." The team's ability to perform under pressure, even when not achieving their ultimate goal, reflects their enduring strength and determination.
