Didih wins Nigeria's fifth gold with record-breaking lift at Glasgow 2026

Team Nigeria is making a remarkable impact at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih securing the country's fifth gold medal. Didih delivered a dominant performance in the women's 53kg event, shattering three Commonwealth Games records on her way to the top of the podium.

Didih dominated the competition from start to finish, rewriting the record books with three Commonwealth Games records on her way to the top of the podium.

Didih's record-breaking spree began with a snatch of 93kg, setting new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records. She then lifted 113kg in the clean and jerk, another double record, before achieving a total lift of 206kg, also a new Games and Commonwealth record. This impressive feat placed her well ahead of India's Gyaneshwari Yadav, who took silver with 199kg, and Canada's Rebeka Groulx, who earned bronze with 178kg.

The weightlifter's triumph came just hours after Edidiong Umoafia clinched Nigeria's fourth gold medal in the men's 71kg weightlifting competition. Umoafia also set a Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 319kg. Nigeria's success in weightlifting builds on earlier gold medals in para powerlifting from Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris.

She finished comfortably ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who claimed silver with a total of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx settled for bronze with 178kg.

With several silver medals also secured across different events, Nigeria is poised to continue its strong performance as athletics and more weightlifting competitions are still to come. The team aims to build on this momentum in pursuit of further medals in Glasgow.

Umoafia lifted a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg, comprising 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk, to finish ahead of Samoa’s Joseph Tafi and Nauru’s Elgin Moses.
