Diego Forlán Set to Coach Uruguay's U-20 and Interim Senior Teams

Uruguay's football association has begun announcing the arrival of Diego Forlán to coach the U-20 team and serve as interim manager for the senior national squad. The announcement came via a video released Thursday on social media, posing the question of whether he would accept the role if called upon.

The video features a journalist asking Forlán, "And if they call you? Do you go or not?" to which he responds, "How? Do you know how I'm going?" The clip then revisits key moments from Forlán's playing career with the Celeste, including their 2011 Copa América title win and his World Cup goals. Forlán, who won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup, will lead the U-20 team and temporarily manage the senior squad for six FIFA international dates until a permanent coach is appointed.

Forlán's coaching experience includes a stint with Peñarol in 2020 and Atenas in the Second Division in 2021. His playing career was extensive, featuring stints with Spanish clubs Villarreal and Atlético de Madrid, England's Manchester United, Argentina's Independiente, and Italy's Inter Milan. He also achieved significant success with the national team, winning the 2011 Copa América and participating in the 2002, 2010, and 2014 World Cups. His individual accolades include the Spanish league's Pichichi Trophy and the UEFA Golden Boot.
