Diego Forlán takes charge of Uruguay, leaves door open for former teammate

Diego Forlán described his appointment as interim coach for Uruguay's senior and U-20 national football teams as a "privilege" and a return "home." The former star striker, a key figure in Uruguay's 2010 World Cup semi-final appearance and 2011 Copa América victory, will manage the senior team's friendlies between September and March. He will also prepare the U-20 squad for the South American Championship in January.

Forlán, who received the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup, emphasized his focus on the present and expressed optimism about the team's morale despite their group-stage exit from the 2026 World Cup under Marcelo Bielsa. He believes the players will learn from past mistakes and work to improve the team's situation.

Addressing the team's goal-scoring concerns and the performance of star striker Darwin Núñez, Forlán remained positive. He also commented on Luis Suárez's previous statement about being available for the national team, leaving the door open for his former teammate's potential return. "If he is selectable, he is Uruguayan," Forlán noted, acknowledging Suárez's experience and continued goal-scoring ability.

This coaching role marks Forlán's return to management after previous stints with Peñarol and a second-division team. His appointment comes as the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) prepares for new leadership elections in March.
