Diego Milito admits renewing Gustavo Costas was “a mistake”: “Racing cannot be in this situation”

Diego Milito has taken responsibility for Racing’s troubled season and admitted that renewing Gustavo Costas’ contract was “a mistake” in hindsight.

“Racing cannot be in the situation it is in,” the club president told reporters. He said the team should not be 22nd in the annual table or sitting 14th or 15th in the tournament. Supporters are unhappy, he said, and the club has listened to them. Milito added that he is also angered when Racing fails to win.

The president nevertheless argued that the recent points total does not fully reflect the team’s performances. He said Racing had played well in recent matches and may have deserved more points. Since Juan Pablo Vojvoda took charge, Milito said, the team has produced several good performances.

Milito described the year as difficult and said Racing must get out of its current situation quickly by winning matches. He defended Vojvoda as a dedicated and professional coach who gives his players tools to improve. The team, he said, is new and still taking shape after many departures and arrivals.

Milito said Vojvoda had recently told him that the team had “a better future than present.” The president said building a new squad and coaching staff takes time, even though results can be elusive during the transition. He also said Racing still has Argentina’s third-most highly valued squad, behind River Plate and Boca Juniors. Since the start of the second half of the season, Racing has won only three of nine matches.
