Diesel Prices in Bucharest Exceed 10 Lei Per Liter Just Days After Tax Cut

Diesel prices in Bucharest have surged past the 10 lei per liter mark, a mere two days after a temporary reduction in excise taxes was implemented. On Tuesday, August 18, five of the main gas station networks in the capital saw prices increase by 15 bani per liter for standard diesel.

This price hike comes despite a temporary 20% reduction in the excise tax on standard diesel, which took effect on August 16. The excise reduction amounted to 560.86 lei per 1,000 liters, but this relief appears to have been short-lived as pump prices have already started to rise again.

Among the monitored networks, Petrom and SOCAR now list standard diesel at 10.14 lei per liter, up from 9.99 lei on Monday. OMV, MOL, and Rompetrol have increased their prices to 10.20 lei per liter, from 10.05 lei the previous day. Lukoil remains the only station that has not changed its price, maintaining it at 10.35 lei per liter.

The increase of 15 bani per liter translates to a higher cost for consumers. For a 50-liter fuel tank, this means an additional expense of 7.50 lei compared to Monday. For a 60-liter tank, the difference amounts to 9 lei. For example, filling a 50-liter tank at Petrom or SOCAR, which cost 499.50 lei on Monday, now costs 507 lei on Tuesday. At OMV, MOL, and Rompetrol, the same 50-liter fill-up increased from 502.50 lei to 510 lei.
