“Do Not Mislead Yourself, Others or the Country”: Terry Gou Urges Chiang Wan-an to Resign Immediately

Former United Microelectronics chairman Robert Tsao has urged Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an to resign, saying a controversy involving Chiang’s eldest son reflects poor judgment.

Chiang’s son, Chiang Te-li, has faced questions over receiving a Taipei City government-funded place to study in the United States. Critics have questioned whether proper conflict-of-interest procedures were followed.

The mayor’s son taking a Taipei City student-exchange slot for personal benefit will inevitably invite public criticism.

Writing on Threads, Tsao offered what he called advice to Chiang and said the mayor should resign immediately rather than seek higher office. Tsao recalled that, while running UMC, he established a three-point ethics code. Employees had to protect the company’s interests within the law, avoid causing losses and use their own judgment about proper conduct.

Tsao criticized what he described as the mayor’s son taking a Taipei student-exchange slot for personal benefit. He said the action would inevitably invite public criticism and accused Chiang of lacking judgment about what officials should and should not do. He ended by urging the mayor to leave office so he would not harm himself, others or the country.
